A few years ago, we did some research on the malayalam alphabet in use in current mediums of print. The common calendar that is issued by every bank, co-operative society or public limited company has the use of the malayalam year (varsham). Its intriguing to know that this is always written in the malayalam numerals but we are yet to find people who use these numbers for counting, or let’s say writing a bill!
For a non reader the numbers look similar in construction to the letters of the alphabet so its quite difficult to understand which ones are numerals.
We did a quick run through of these numbers to people we know who read malayalam ~ most readers realise these are numbers only after they read it and can’t recognise it as a letter.

So, is this a decorative part of malayalam language?
